NAAC – Sodium Acetate
Sodium Acetate – Cryotech NAAC® Solid Runway Deicer
Benefits
NAAC is selected for non-airside applications, primarily because it does not contain chlorides that cause corrosion to steel embedded in concrete. Additionally, NAAC is effective at much lower temperatures, 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C), than sodium chloride and urea, which lose their effect below 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C).
Note: If concrete quality is the primary concern – for example new concrete – then CMA is recommended.
Safe for runways: meets FAA approved specifications.
Exothermic: gives off heat as it dissolves, melting ice faster than common deicers.
Fast and better: works fast like calcium chloride, without chloride-induced corrosion.
Staying power: works longer, requiring fewer applications.
Easy to apply: applied with the same equipment as urea.
Safe for the environment: non-persistent, biodegradable.
Manufactured from pure materials: NAAC does not track like common deicers.
PERFORMANCE
- Contains no chlorides.
- Excellent melting properties.
- Works faster than urea and sodium chloride.
- Is active at lower temperatures -0° F (-18° C).
- Requires less material to achieve similar effectiveness.
APPLICATION
Deicing – apply in uniform pattern:
- Near 32o F on thin ice = 3-5 lbs./1000 ft.
- Less than 10° F on 1 inch ice = 10-25 lbs./1000 ft.
- Re-apply when new accumulation shows first tendency to bond.
- Plow once bond is broken.
Prewetting – airports may apply potassium acetate to NAAC at spreader outlet at a rate of 10% by weight.
ENVIRONMENT
- Lower BOD than urea.
- Biodegrades at low temperatures.
- Low toxicity to fish and mammals.
HANDLING
- Store in original container.
- Avoid excessive moisture which may cause caking.
- Excessive handling may cause dustiness.
